The Health of the Basenji.

In general the Basenji as breed, is having no problems concerning the health. Still you have to keep in mind that they are live animals, and that everybody has to take his responsibility to ensure the health of the breed. It is not only the responsibility of the breeder, but also of the judge at a show, the national Kennel Club, the local Kennel Club of the breed, and the buyer of the puppy. They all helping by the good health of the breed.

The only real problem that can happened is the Fancony Syndrome. The term syndrome refers to the association of several clinically recognizable features. In short, the kidney will stop functioning. Because of that the life cycle of the Basenji will shortening. Fancony will manifest itself between the age of 4 & 8 years.

With a DNA test, the Basenji can be tested to see if he is Free, Carrier or Affected from Fancony.
